Some excellent features in JADE 6

I have just created a class that should have been a subclass of Object. Unfortunately I made it a subclass of some other class. When I discovered my mistake, I simply held the control key down and dragged the class to the correct position.

It's a simple little feature but really handy. What does everyone else think about JADE 6?

Pretty good I reckon. The best new feature is Packages. And there are some great new controls, Rich Text, Edit Mask and Docking Container. The new implementation of importing HTML documents and treating them as objects is great too.

my favourite feature is Method Views

the new skins are also amazing

We haven't started using it yet (need to do quality testing on it to make sure it doesn't break our applications and also deploy it to over 300 sites).

I have been to a few conferences about it and the new conditional references feature looks very handy, as does the SDS feature (which doesn't come free unfortunately).

What does everyone else think of the new pricing structure?

What does everyone else think of the new pricing structure?

I think it's fantastic - one of the problems with developing in Jade was the lack of a community, and some of that community you can only get by people programming in Jade in their own time for the fun of it (so they feel more free distributing the source), and that was always unlikely given the cost of dev licenses. I think this is a very good move for them and I hope it works out.

We do feel a bit silly having alredy spent loads of money on dev licenses and report writer licenses though...

John,

We place enormous value on the existing JADE developer community. The issue you raised was definitely considered when we looked at JADE 6 pricing.

However in the final analysis, charging for version 6 of JADE Developer just to make our existing users feel they had value, didn't make a compelling argument. As you have identified, increasing the JADE community benefits everyone, and that was definitely the driver behind the free developer initiative.

Most of my favourites have already been covered, SDS, Conditional Collections, Skin enhancements, method scratch pads.

There is one other feature that I also really like and that is the Parent Aspect setting on forms as it means I can get rid of a whole swag of now unnecessary resize logic which will help for thin client connections over slower networks as you can now make the form resize nicely without any network traffic back to the app server being required. Brilliant!

The new painter Change Type option for a control is also great if you want to replace some existing controls with a new subclassed control to extend the behaviour. No more painting a new control, reparenting all the existing controls if applicable, copying event methods, etc, etc.

Yes, it's a tad frustrating.

At one point context sensitive help wouldn't work at all for me using Acrobat Reader 6.. but after reinstallation of Reader 6 & the Jade 6 documentation I got it working.

I find myself going back to the 5.2 .hlp file, but I guess it's what I'm used to. Hopefully I'll get used to the pdf help (I guess I'll have no choice!).

I believe JADE's reasoning for going to PDF help was so they didn't have to maintain the documentation in multiple formats.. which would have been a hassle.

I prefer pdf as it is a more open format. I use Linux at work (Mandrake 9.1) but have a VMWare install which I use solely to run Jade applications. The PDF viewers are more standard in Linux than .hlp viewers. If I want to be able to access them via Jade (by pressing F1) I need to install a PDF viewer on my Windows virtual machine (which is a pain).
