Editing schema extract files

Hi all,

Whenever I edited a schema extract file in the past (ie to change the inheritence structure of classes) I used notepad. However, the Jade editor itself fully supports the schema extract syntax with color syntax highlighting so its much nicer to edit a schema file (*.cls, *.scm, *.mth etc) within a workspace in Jade itself.

Seems fairly obvious in hindsight...

On a related topic: beware of editing .ddb files with Notepad. I understand that if you have embedded binary data in the ddb file e.g. for pictures, then Notepad may not save the binary part correctly and you can corrupt the file. I've been told that if you really need to edit a .ddb file which contains binary data then use Wordpad.

I think that even WordPad gets it wrong - from memory (though it's been a long time since I had to edit a .ddb file), you need to use Window Write (that came with Windows NT 3.51) or a hex editor.

However, I don't know of any situation in the current version of JADE where you'd want to be editing a .ddb file. If you do, you need to be aware that records in the .ddb file contain a field length at the beginning, so if you're going to change the length of the record, you'd need to update this too. Beware.... very dangerous stuff!!!

One good reason to edit the .ddb file is to remove the instance of Global as this contains data which will overwrite the existing instance in the target database. This can result in lost/changed user data.

Fortunately this will be fixed in Jade 5.

Speaking of which (our holy grail from which all will be solved from
when it is released, including the Kosovo crisis.....) - when is it
due? Last I heard was May - May-be, May-not, May 2003 ??
Anyone know the latest ??
