What does the DbFile Class do?

I was searching around the help file, and I found out about this class called 'DbFile'. I read it, but I can't exactly understand what it is supposed to do.

It seems like it is a class designed to hold references to files and it can backup and restore files. Sounds useful to me, but I want to know exactly what it does before I even try it.

It is the class that handles jade database files.

You can use it to perform certifications,compactions,backups...

All this functionality is provided by the jade database utility,
so unless you want to write your own facility or perform these
operations at run-time I wouldn't be too bothered about it.

Ps The class is outlined fully in the jade help file.

Oh okay. I couldn't understand the help file. I thought it was just a class which held references to any file.

I understand where you're coming from with the help though - at times it is a little obscure and seems to be written more from a perspective of finding out stuff if you already know how it works.

I agree Craig.

I can see it would be difficult to work out the purpose of and how to use a class such as DbFile from the online help alone. The admin operations provided by the DbFile class a part of a Database Administration Framework that is fully documented with sample code in chapter 9 of the JADE Developers reference manual; unfortunately this is only available in hard copy book form at the moment and only a subset of the information is available in online help. The online help is a useful *reference* once you know how 'the stuff' works, in many cases the developers reference is more appropriate for finding that part out.

Its a pity we haven't been putting the reference manuals on the CD in a PDF (online book) format so that developers can get more complete and up to date information.

Yes, I do have the book, I just find it a bit annoying to get it out and find what I'm looking for. The books are a bit dusty because I haven't touched them in a while.

A CD would be nice. I don't really like PDF because Jade might not be able to tell Acrobat Reader to instantly go to a certain page.
