Upgrading Jade

Postby M45HY » Wed Oct 09, 2013 3:30 am

Hi All,

I just had a quick question; at work, we are currently using Jade 6.2.17 and we've finally decided that we're are going to move to Jade 6.3. The question that I wanted to ask is that would we need to upgrade to 6.2.20 or can we go straight to 6.3? My director did find a document about upgrading but that was about upgrading from 6.1 to 6.3 and it said that you had to upgrade to 6.2.20 first.

Thanks,

My suspicion would be that at the time that document was written 6.2.20 was the most current version of Jade 6.2, so they used that release in their instructions?!?

What I can say, is that for one of our products we upgraded from 6.2.17 directly to 6.3.05 for some of our clients and from 6.2.17 directly to 6.3.06 for the rest of our clients. So there was certainly no issue going from 6.2.17 to either of those 6.3 releases.

Hope that helps,
BeeJay.

We went from 6.2.17 directly to 6.3.08 back in 2011. As usual, there were some minor issues, but otherwise it worked OK.

You should use 6.3.12 as the target release to migrate to. It is now the only supported 6.3 release (until February 2015), and contains a consolidation of all fixes released during the lifetime of the 6.3 release.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering whether there's a guide that shows how one can update their existing JADE Databases?

Thanks,
Omash

Documentation in the upgrade download itself details how to do the upgrade. I understand there is typically an install shield for this, though we never use that, we always roll our own upgrades using the manual instructions provided in the upgrade.

Start with the "Release Notes" document from the Jade website ("JADE Version x.y.zz Release Information"). It's available separately without having to download the whole package.
here ... <http://www.jade.co.nz/jade/doc.htm>

(Reading the "Release Notes" or, at least the README file for ANY software is always a good thing to do first when installing or upgrading).

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the help. I've downloaded the release notes and I'm going through them. There's just a couple of things I wanted to clarify first:
  • Question 1: The Release Notes say that if you are on 6.2, you need to uninstall the jadrap from a database. Does anyone know how to do that?
  • Question 2: What do I download first? Do I have to run the Presentation Client first or the Thin Client or should I download the Full JADE and install the Development side first?
Thanks everyone,
Omash

I presume you're referring to the instructions regarding when you have your jadrap setup to run as a Windows Service. If your jadrap has been setup to run as a Windows Service, then you use your jadrap shortcut to launch the jadrap in service control mode and use the Options -> Service menu to open the dialog Service Configuration dialog and uncheck the "Run Server as Service" option as per the following two screen shots:

  • Question 2: What do I download first? Do I have to run the Presentation Client first or the Thin Client or should I download the Full JADE and install the Development side first?
You'll need to download the appropriate version of the full JADE install to upgrade the Jade database(s) on your server machine. For your presentation clients, the easiest approach is to just let the Jade Smart Thin Client™ perform the automatic upgrade. You will need to be logged on with a usercode that has administrator rights on the presentation client for the automatic thin client upgrade process to work.

Cheers,
BeeJay.

Hi Guys,

Thank you everyone for the replies.
I checked the jadrap (as BeeJay has illustrated above) and our system was the same so I continued to upgrade the Development side of the database first, which was a success. However, the system returned an error message (which I expected looking at the Release Notes: Step 15 of Upgrading to JADE 6.3.12 from a JADE 6.2 or Earlier JADE 6.3 Release) and it's regarding our Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs). The error message I received can be seen below.

The Release Notes tell me to look at Chapter 3 of the JADE Object Manager Guide but I was wondering whether someone could give me a simple reason on why this error message occurred and how I can recompile the DLL it's on about (if this is what I have to do) or get rid of the problem.

Any help will be most appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Omash
