Proposed New NewsGroup - JADE DEMO's

Hi all,

I was thinking it would be nice to know about what JADE products everybody is delivering/selling these days and thought that it might be great if we could have a new newsgroup where everyone could tell/show what JADE products they have to sell/offer.

What do yah think?

I was thinking of either working demo's (deployed/no-source/source whatever) or marketing blurbs like they have in the solutions section of the JADE homepage. With/without pricings?

Would people participate? And can we have a show of hands for
interested in such a newsgroup, please?

Cheers,
Lynda

I am not sure. If I could have encrypted source code, then a definite yes. Otherwise I would have to have a long think about whether to give out my stuff.

Ray,

When you perform a schema extract you can encrypt your source by checking the "Encrypt Sources" radio button on the extract dialog.

When someone loads your encrypted schema JADE automatically strips the source code.

Thanks,
Brian Johnstone,

I already knew that. I just meant that if the newsgroup allowed the option of encrypted source code.

This is the greatest idea ever! All my programs as far as I know, need someone to look at them and say "This could be improved", and you know what? My instant messenger has been so improved by these newsgroups, that I can't exactly put only myself in the credits. So if this goes ahead, you can see my (our) program in action. And tell me how it could be improved. Also you could have fun at talking to everyone else on your network.

An Instant Messager written in Jade? Sounds interesting. How did you implement the networking? Using TCP/IP connections, UDP? or object notifications? Do you need a central server, or is it a distributed model? Any security / privacy / authentication features?

I sometimes think it would be an interesting project to write a game in jade, or at least the server portion of a client/server game. Several things make it impractical though. Once is the cost of a jade license, and the other is the size of a jade installation. None of these things are faults with Jade (i dont know of any games that use a relalational database either), but I think it does make it impractical for this type of application.

It might be useful to have some Instant Messaging functionality *within* an existing jade application i.e. a server process authomatically messages clients on certain conditions ie "ABC Ltd share price has jumped to $1.10", "Daily reports have printed and are ready for collection" etc, or user-to-user.

Re: Server Structure

It just uses a database and notifications right now. It doesn't exactly have a server program but I guess there is a JADE Database Server that is the server. It is more like a distributed model, where there really isn't any server.

I recently made a battleship program. Battleship isn't a very complicated game, it is just a program that used a table.
It had sort of the same structure as the instant messenger, all it did was notify the other player what happened, and had a database and everything. It has a few bugs in the main game, but I wasn't exactly concentrating on making it the game right, I was concentrating on designing a program.

This idea of having a chat within some other multiuser program could be very useful. That is what I did in my Battleship program. You could chat against the person you were playing against. It was really useful and cool. You could taunt them while you were playing. Within any sort of program, talking to people is very interesting. And that is why I find this chatting feature very interesting. Because you can talk to other people.
