Linux and imported libraries

Hi,
I am toying with the idea of setting up a test server running linux to see how Jade performs on it, but have a couple of question that hopefully someone could answer/confirm for me.
I presume an ActiveX control on a form will still function OK on the client PC (assuming it was running Windows), but will not run on any GUI forms running on the server, such as background processors etc... What about other imported libraries, dlls? I also assume they will only work when called on a Windows machine? If we have thin client apps using imported libraries, and usePresentationSystem := false, then the appServer will need to be on a Windows machine too?
Similarly with WebSessions, if they use an imported control, they also will need to be on a windows machine? So if your app uses ActiveX and COM libraries, then it will only be Jadrap that can actually run on a Linux machine...???

Are many people actually running Jade on a Linux server?
If so why? Is it for performance reasons? What flavour of Linux? SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake, Fedora...?

Hi Stephen,
Windows binaries (which includes COM components and dll's) will only run on Windows computers. I would imagine that you would get an exception if you tries to run them on a Linux computer.

I am in the process of installing JADE on a Linux box for a client of mine. This is initially a proof-of-concept project to prove to potentially new customers that our product will run on the Linux platform.

From a commercial perspective we are trying JADE on Linux because customers are starting to demand it. From a personal perspective I think it's great to try a more open platform (I use Linux (Gentoo) both at home and at work and use VMWare solely to run JADE clients).

Even though JADE does not officially support running on anything but SLES8 and RH9 I am trying this first install on a fresh Gentoo installation. I prefer it for flexibility and performance. JADE is not officially supported on the 2.6 kernel but I have heard murmerings that it does work - I'll soon see and will report back here.
