The Wise Install Master looks a very good option. Are their any problems with choosing an installer for Jade?? Does anyone have any experience with Wise, or any other for that matter??

Regards james

I have used various InstallShield products to install JADE applications and would personally only use InstallShield Professional 6.1 (ISP6) at this stage. This gives you access to the InstallScript language which makes it possible to control schema loads and the like. It means a new language to learn but it, like the JADE language, has something of a Pascal heritage so you will find some aspects similar to JADE.

I say "at this stage" because Windows 2000 comes with Windows Installer built into it. This changes the approach used for installations mainly because the installation engine is built into the operating system rather than supplied with the setup package. This increases significantly the features that you can build into your own installations. Whilst you can, in theory, set up an installation using only the Windows Installer platform SDK from the MS website it appears to me to be a very complex exercise. A commercial GUI installation product like InstallShield For Windows Installer (ISWI) is well worth using. The InstallShield Professional 2000 product is actually a bundle of both ISP6 and ISWI. By the way ISWI can also be used with Win95/98 and NT 4 (it automatically bundles the install engine with the setup files for these O/S's).

I have had only a cursory glance at Wise so I can't compare the two. My reason for choosing InstallShield was that JADE itself uses it and this opens up the possibility of repackaging my applications and the JADE installation in one seamless bundle to hopefully make life simpler for the end-user installer.

To find out anything else and get demo copies etc go to www.installshield.com

Cheers, Kevin

Hi Kevin,

after reading your news item, I am wondering as to what is required to install Jade from something like InnstallShield. We use that here and use it to install our Delphi, VB, C++ solutions but we are wondering how to go about doing an automated JADE install? If you could provide me with a some pointers, places to look etc that would be great, but I understand if you can't due to your place of employment.

Thanks in advance

WISE Installer works well for installing JADE, the installation is extremely simple and we haven't had a problem yet.
The only thing we do not do is install the JADE ODBC drivers.
Send me an email if you would like details.

Hi
As Kevin states InstallShield Professional is a reasonable bet for the reason's stated --- but it is also 3 times the price of say, InstallShield Express ($1500+ vs. $500).

We use the latter and it has a reduced feature set but still covers most of the basics and allows us to bundle up our JADE applications into a swept up installation procedure.

It doesn't easily allow itself to register OCX's, DLL's etc. and I haven't managed to be able to get a separate UnInstall option appear on the Windows sub-menu (it does build an uninstall option into the Add/Remove icon listbox in Control Panel).

But for simple straight JADE application's it does the job
