naivette I thought I would merely

I've 'inherited' a Barcode Scanne; MT-306 DK Bar Code Reader, it's a standard in-line (in that it fits between the keyboard and PC). In my naivette I thought I would merely plug it in and start scanning barcodes into a database. Do I need software or drivers or what? I innocently thought "Ahhh, Bar Code Reader. it'll deal with anything I stick in front of it!" and now I'm guessing I need to program the head piece to recognise a particular type of code but have no idea how.

If it plugs inline between the keyboard and the PC, then it may just output keycodes when it scans a barcode. This would appear to the PC to be the same as if the digits were being keyed by someone typing on the keyboard. As far as the PC software is concerned it is just "keyboard input".
This was common for card readers and scanners many years ago when I was working with them.
This type of connection was known as a "wedge".
