Jade on Macs

G'Day All.

I know it's an old question, and answered in the negative, but I'm
going to throw it out again, and change it a little, just in case...

1. Is there any part of Jade Corp looking at porting Jade to Mac? (v7 perhaps?)

2. Has anyone successfully run Jade on a combined Mac & NT network,
with PC & Mac clients?

3. Has anyone got any thoughts as to how this could be achived - web browser usage is one of our thoughts, but has plenty of issues - any other ideas?

Thanks Heaps

Web browser will certainly work with any computer.

With Macs in particular, you can also use VirtualPC and run any normal Jade code. I would recommend a PowerPC processor, with a min of about 300MHz - which means 2-3 yrs old - to run Jade server or fat-client. Thin client probably could be a slower processor - but I haven't tried that.

The other options are to run a Citrix client, or the Jade Java-based thin client.

Citrix can be expensive, but its pretty good for deploying something like jade. I dont know of the current status of the java thin client (is it still supported?), but back when we used it, it was only really only good for deploying fairly simple user interfaces.

Thanks
Yeah, there is no way that we would look at running server on macs, but it's just having potential clients with pc & macs, and they're wanting a total solution.
I haven't thought about the Java Client - I don't know much about implementing that... does anyone?

Cheers!

I tried to get Java Thin Client working late last year. There were problems with the code (Jade haven't been updating Java Thin Client - as I guess no one uses it). I haven't heard from Jade support for ages on this one, so I don't know if it's been fixed. I'd love to know if anyone has got it working - for curiosity sake only.

I'm not sure on the timing of when OSX came out for Mac vs when this posing happened. At any rate, now that Mac has moved to a Unix based operating system, it seems like a good idea to get Jade working on it. I know in my work environment we have alot of clients runing PC's and Mac's on the same network. it seems crazy that we can only produced Thin Client Interfaces for the PC's on a language as powerfull and OO as Jade.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this? is there any plan to port the Language?

From what I know (which may well be wrong) is that any planned ports
of the Jade client to *nix platforms will be using Wine
(www.winehq.com). It's a shame that the graphical parts of the product can't be abstracted out enough to allow for native ports (although I'd imagine changing the way it works would be hideously expensive).

Since OSX runs on a BSD variant, there are ways of running X11/XFree86 applications on it, and Wine runs on BSD then the next logical step
would be that any Linux port of the client should work on OSX. This
would only apply on x86 hardware though.

Being able to run Jade applications on Windows, Linux AND Macintosh
would be a very big plus for Jade as an environment and Jade as a company, I would suspect.

Regards,
Allistar.
